Keeping Tradition

In the hopes of keeping Ken's tradition of fulfilling everyone's lesbian gorilla needs (2 days and still going strong!), I present you with the following important information:

A psychologist claims that a group of lesbian monkeys in Japan shows that Darwin's theories of evolution are incorrect. Paul Vasey, of the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, has been studying the sex lives of Japanese macaques.

According to Darwin's theory of sexual selection, said Vasey, the male monkeys should compete amongst themselves for access to potential mates -- but the macaques don't follow that pattern.

A colony of 120 wild macaques in the mountains in Kyoto shows enormous sexual diversity, including female-female relationships. Females will reject the advances of a pursuing male in favor of their existing female partner 92.5 percent of the time.

You're welcome.

This is important work, Emily. Thank you.

Females will reject the advances of a pursuing male in favor of their existing female partner or book or ipod 92.5 percent of the time.

so female humans act like female monkeys then?

sounds like definitive proof of evolution to me.

We've got females that are competing for males with other females, we've got males that are being choosy, males that are sexually coercing females ... we've got females sexually harassing males that don't want to copulate with them, we've got females that have sex with each other, we've got females that are competing with males for other females, we have females that are mounting males.

For their next evolutionary leap - The macaques have a 'cuddle party'..

Posted by: peteb at March 3, 2005 07:27 AM

And the female monkey says "Sorry, boy, I don't need you. I have macaque."

Posted by: Ken Summers, Perversion Catalyst at March 3, 2005 07:37 AM

Pete,
If you ever use the words "cuddle party" on this blog again, I will have you killed.

Posted by: Emily at March 3, 2005 07:37 AM

pete, i hear the macaques give eachother human plushies for christmas...

Posted by: Mr. Bingley at March 3, 2005 07:39 AM

And after cuddle parties, can plushies be far behind?

Posted by: Ken Summers, Perversion Catalyst at March 3, 2005 07:40 AM

Again, Emily?

Posted by: peteb at March 3, 2005 07:47 AM

I will kill you as many times as it takes for you to learn your lesson, Pete.

Posted by: Emily at March 3, 2005 07:53 AM

I should let you know, Emily, that may take a while..

Posted by: peteb at March 3, 2005 08:12 AM

It will be worth the effort in the end.

Posted by: Emily at March 3, 2005 08:16 AM

Besides, think of how much money you can save being dead, especially for tax purposes.

Posted by: Emily at March 3, 2005 08:17 AM

Macaques are nice, but for pure, unadulterated monkey sex, the bonobo chimpanzees cannot be beat.

Fuck! "Monkey sex research!" I meant to say "monkey sex research!"

Posted by: Chris at March 3, 2005 09:08 AM

It's okay, Chris. You're among friends here, we won't judge.

Just don't stand too close, okay?

You will all now notice that Ken has created a very special "Lesbian Gorilla Blogging" category to keep things efficient and organized. A most important gesture.

Emily,

Wrong, this.

"A psychologist claims that a group of lesbian monkeys in Japan shows that Darwin's theories of evolution are incorrect. Paul Vasey, of the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, has been studying the sex lives of Japanese macaques.
According to Darwin's theory of sexual selection, said Vasey, the male monkeys should compete amongst themselves for access to potential mates ..
"

I don't believe Darwin ever wrote or said such a thing.

And even if he did, it misses the point altogether about natural selection.

Darwin's idea focused on what "succesful" species do in order to promulgate their genetic traits.

The fact that there are examples of monkeys or other species doing unexpected things, does not invalidate the general idea. Rather, it may yet some day (and very likely so), show how a species dies off, given it's unsuccessful and maladaptive behaviors.

On the other hand, there may be something wrong with male macaques, or that female macaque sexual action is just so good, that it's hard to give up, even if it means extinction.

Give the macaques some time, and with behavior like this, there might not be any more of them.

But at least the female half will have died satisfied.

Just sayin'.

Thanks for pointing out the errors, MTT. I just cut and pasted the first reasonable thing I could find after Googling "lesbian gorillas," to be honest.

Posted by: Emily at March 3, 2005 03:50 PM

"lesbian monkey" gets this

hmmm....

Posted by: Mr Bingley at March 3, 2005 04:15 PM

Miss Emily,

Please do not think I was criticizing you!

Never!

On the contrary, I, like many, sing your praises, especially when you come to Ken's aid with additional lesbian gorilla stories.

Rather, the point I was trying to make, was that neither the psychologist, nor the writer who quoted him, seemed to have any interest in understanding the scientific issues at hand.

Besides, I still haven't read the books (you know the ones). And I must before NYC!

My bad.

Don't Piss Off Lesbian Chimps!

Posted by: Mr. Bingley at March 4, 2005 06:33 AM

if it indeed "proves Darwin wrong" (though I fail to see how), I still don't imagine the creationists will be using it in their pamphlets any time soon...
