And I mean ENFORCE, as in holding trials and hanging the scumbags in Gitmo instead of treating them like houseguests. And it's why I consider Durbin, et al., traitors:
7 July 2005; 12:54 ET: Preliminary reports from a source inside the Pentagon indicate that one of the operatives involved in this morning's bombings in London was recently released from the prison at Guantanamo.Yeah, it's preliminary but reportedly several Gitmo releases have already been recaptured on the battlefields so it's certainly not implausible. Posted by Ken S at July 8, 2005 06:24 AM | TrackBack (1) |UPDATED 10:35 PM ET: A clarification was made by the source providing this information, noting that "one of the bombers who is believed to be involved in this attack was recently released from the prison at Guantanamo, Cuba." The source did not elaborate about how the suspect was reportedly identified so early, although suggested he was onboard bus 30 that exploded outside of the British Medical Association at 9:47 local time. We are continuing our investigation.
This article (http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Jul2005/20050707_1998.html) doesn't really say anything we don't already know, but it's a good read and has some good quotes.
Rumsfeld, Rice: U.S. Will Stand by Britain in Face of Terror
By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, July 7, 2005 – If terrorists thought they could intimidate the people of a great nation during today's attacks in London, "they picked the wrong people and the wrong nation," Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said in a statement released today.
As for the GITMO connections, this comes as no suprise. Honestly, the people that complain about this stuff have no mind as to what is going on or the reasons why. They get a wild hair, feel they must do something to criticize the current administration and will cause a stir because of it. The eventual outcome, arguably London Bombings, is never their fault because they were only trying to uphold basic human rights.
I agree Ken. Traitors.
You should read the Geneva Conventions.
The inmates of GITMO are not protected by them, nor should they be. If western governments start to apply the Geneva Conventions to illegal combatants, they may as well tear them up. The GC were developed to protect civilians and to provide sanctuary for soldiers who observe the rules of war - and no one else.
Posted by: Kate at July 8, 2005 07:38 AMKate, that's my point exactly. The protections do not apply to illegal combatants, who may be tried and executed under the "laws of war", per the Geneva Conventions.
If we refuse to punish those who do not abide by the Conventions, then the Conventions mean nothing.
Posted by: Ken Summers at July 8, 2005 07:45 AMI agree with the hanging, part, though.
Posted by: Kate at July 8, 2005 07:48 AMYou're correct Ken, but I fear that the Brits have even less of the stomach we have to fight this war as it needs to be. I just pray that they don’t go wobbly on us. Only time will tell.
