Oh, Screw His "Talent"

You know, I really hate it when somebody acting like an extreme asshole and treating the people he works with like crap has his shit behavior tolerated or even dismissed because he's "creative" or "talented" or a "perfectionist" or any other "scare quote" description you can think of that's applied to artists that, had they been employed in any other professional field, would either be out of a job or regularly told off and eventually shunned by their co-workers instead of being heaped with praise.

Well, my estimation of Colin Farrell, whom I never really cared for one way or the other, just went up a smidge: "Despite that and his hard-partying reputation, Farrell was very well-behaved, according to crew members. 'Yes, Colin comes to play around, but he always showed up on time and prepared,' one says. 'Jamie is more of a diva in the sense that he was afraid of boats, afraid of planes—there were a lot of things where he was afraid for himself. Colin will do anything.'"

The only thing that kept coming to mind is, "What's that goofball Will Farrell doing playing Sonny Crockett???" :-) I don't get out much.

The is a vast supply of smart and talented people, the difficult thing is identifying them. The next problem is getting rid of the difficult people.

Andrea,
Me too. I really respect entertainers that take the professional aspects of their careers seriously.

Aaron,
They're only difficult to identify initially. It only takes so long before you recognize them as the one being an irrational shitball yelling at everyone for not fulfilling their "vision" correctly. But you're right - there are millions of talented people dying to work in the movies. Unfortunately, a handful of them become irreplacable after the cameras start rolling.

Are you talking about Mann or Foxx?

Sounds to me like Mann and Foxx deserve each other.

Tex,
Mann seems to be the one that everyone keeps saying is worth his difficulties because he's so brilliant, but as far as I'm concerned, they both need to be knocked upside the head.

For me, a big red flag was where people were trying to praise Mann for "keeping his creative options open." That is not helpful. A person needs to be able to choose which movie to make, or else there will be, in the end, no movie at all. You lose audience when you can't bear to pick one thing and stick to it - hence the frustration of X-Files, Lost, and many other shows that seemed to change their mind every ten minutes.
