"I thought you was dead."

That's only funny when you know that throughout the movie, people have been saying that to Jake, until finally he says something like, "I'm gonna kill the next man who says that." And, as it turns out, he did.

I've always thought there was something missing in that movie: Why did he live apart from his family, and why did everyone think he was dead, and why was that important? Maybe it's in the parts they had to cut to fit the commercials in, because I don't think I've seen it without commercials.

IIRC, they were divorced, but because divorce was stigmatized it wasn't spoken of and everyone assumed Jake was dead.

You're right, it's really only funny in context of the whole movie but I think that's also true of some of the others. I had actually forgotten the line "I'm gonna kill the next man who says that." Even without that, when Boone says it at the end of the movie it's pretty funny.

"Correct me if I'm wrong, Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers, they'll lock me up and throw away the key."

I also liked in Sideways when the guy is buying a Barely Legal and he says "No, not that one. The new one."

"I just completed my opening statement!"
- Arthur Kirkland (Al Pacino), ...And Justice for All, as he is being dragged out of the courtroom after delivering a rant

(The next one is quoted from memory)

"I thought he was just bragging."
- Nora Charles (Myrna Loy), in one of the Thin Man movies, responding to an investigator who inquires if she knew about her husband's womanizing past

From X-Men:

Wolverine: [commenting on the X-Men uniforms] "You actually go outside in these things?"
Cyclops: "Well, what would you prefer? Yellow spandex?"
