Posted by: Alan K, Henderson, Parole Officer to the Stars at August 28, 2006 01:22 AMInterestingly enough (okay maybe not THAT interesting, but still informational), the US "dolphins" in the insigna for submarine qualification are a pair of male dolphins (i.e. the fish not the mammal). wThis makes perfect sense in today's modern fleet as the dolphin is one of the fastest fish in the ocean, but makes no sense when the submarine force first started as the old diesel boats were slow moving underwater and were "air breathing" (i.e. had to come up to the surface to recharge the batteries.
The British on the other hand use the mammal "dolphin" in their insigna which made perfect sense in the old days, but now, not so much.
