Wait just a freakin' minute. I thought Canada was one of those gun control utopias where crime doesn't happen and the gang bangers pack flowers and kumbaya and stuff.
Montreal shooting rampage kills studentThe reporter also demonstrates his cultural bias. It should be referred to as a "northeastern-indigenous-American" haircut.

Thu Sep 14, 5:34 AM ETMONTREAL - A young man in a black trench coat and a mohawk haircut opened fire Wednesday at a Montreal college, slaying a woman and wounding at least 19 other people before police shot and killed him, witnesses and authorities said.
Naturally, Deb and Jeff are all over it before I got to it. Feckin' time zones.

I live (and teach) in a concealed-carry state. Many of our students are avid hunters and sportsmen or women. I suspect that if some twisted person were to try that here, one of the students would go, "I don't THINK so." and pull out their gun (or run out to their truck and get it) and drop the guy before he did too much damage.
(Or at least that's what I hope would happen - and I think it would, too, considering what a few of the students offered to do on behalf of a colleague who had his car vandalized in one of the campus lots...)
Posted by: ricki at September 14, 2006 06:34 AMOh, they're already trying to blame all of their crime problems on us.
And yeah, the students would definitely step in. That's what happened at that school in Tennessee a few years back.

Hahahaha, when I first quickly read through this I read it as "Many of our students are avid hunters and sportsmen of women," which certainly reminded me of my college days...

I don't think all of the "bag limits" the guys in my classes joke about necessarily refer to deer...
I've had people from ultra-gun-control states look at me in disbelief when I tell them that I'm pretty sure some of my students are packin'. They ask me if I feel "unsafe." I tell them no - most of these kids have been around guns and hunting since they were kneehigh to grasshoppers. They know what guns can do. They respect that guns in the wrong hands can be very deadly and dangerous. (But by the same token: a gun in the right hands at a bad time can save lives.) Sure, there might be the sicko who snaps and decides to "take out" the people who thwarted him or made fun of him, but people like that are far less than 1% of the population.
(And it's my informal conclusion that guys (or women) who spend their weekends fishing or in a deer blind are less likely to be that kind of sicko. I know to some that sounds maniacally counterintuitive but most of the really f-ed up people I've taught have not been the "good ol' boys" or the "good ol' girls," in fact, quite the reverse.)
