Heard it on the radio but can't find a link yet so I can't find the details. Any help would be greatly appreciated, because it's possible this short version is not entirely accurate.
It seems that, after months of Phil Angelides talking about making the rich "pay their fair share", someone in LA yesterday finally asked the obvious question, "Who are the rich?"
Apparently, Angelides defines "rich" as having income over $100,000.
Still wondering who gets to decide what a "fair share" is.
Posted by Ken S at September 28, 2006 06:38 AM | TrackBack (0) |I'll strike a deal with ol' Phil. I'll advocate the rich paying their fair share of money as soon as he starts encouraging otherwise able-bodied and capable people feeding off of the welfare system to do their fair share of work.

Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at September 28, 2006 08:08 AMKen, I found this story in the OC Register (reg req) that says:
"The cornerstone of Angelides' campaign right now is a tax-relief plan unveiled Wednesday that would offer tax breaks to families earning less than $100,000 - and increase taxes for the wealthiest Californians and for some big businesses."
The "tax-relief" is a tax credit of "up to $660" for families making less than $100k. And a 50% increase in property-tax relief (I'm not kidding, that's the language they use) for "low-income senior and disabled owners and renters".
I may have a post about this soon.
Posted by: KG at September 28, 2006 08:24 AMthat story is from August, everything else I've seen just refers to "raising taxes on the wealtiest Californians"
Posted by: KG at September 28, 2006 08:27 AMThanks KG. I had found some of those also, but not one about yesterday. It does make me think that perhaps what I heard on the radio was a misconstrual, or maybe that Angelides misspoke yesterday. I just can't find anything specific yet.
Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at September 28, 2006 08:41 AMBTW, how exactly does one give property tax relief to renters?
Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at September 28, 2006 08:42 AMI'm guessing some sort of renters tax credit.
What I love though is that the "relief" is up to $660. So basically, if you max out, you get enough money for a decent weekend in Vegas. Can't even buy a nice HD flat screen TV for that.
Posted by: KG at September 28, 2006 09:31 AMStill wondering who gets to decide what a "fair share" is.
The usual people, Ken. The enlightened, the intellectual elite, the theorists - anyone but US - you know, the people whose money everyone is talking about.
Posted by: Nightfly at September 28, 2006 09:59 AMThis reminds me of an old Rob Lowe line from West Wing, someone in the White House was talking about the whole "fair share" thing and Lowe (who's character was an attorney), turns around and says something along the lines of, "I pay 27 times the rate of an average American, so the way I see it, I'm paying my fair share and the fair share of 26 other people. A little gratitude would be nice."
Of course that was back when WW was kinda balanced.
Posted by: KG at September 28, 2006 10:10 AMThat's a great line, KG!
Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at September 28, 2006 10:12 AMI like that line, too.
I've come dangerously close to the "a little gratitude would be nice" with students who are here on govt'l financial aid, which means that we the taxpayers (including I the taxpayer..) are paying their way to go to college. So somehow, it pisses me off even more to see them skipping class and giving a less-than-half-assed-effort than the kids whose folks are forking out the dough for them to get their ed-u-ma-cation.

A RIGHT cannot be suspended or revoked, being a natural consequence of being human.
