Dear Parents,
Please allow this letter to serve as a warning to any of you who might consider allowing your children to forego an education in favor of a lucrative acting career.
Wouldn't someone like that have someone on staff to write those things for her?
It's almost funnier for me to think that there is, but when they run it by her, she pulls out some reading glasses and a red pen to edit in her personal flair as the assistant sighs like Kif in Futurama.
Posted by: marc at November 22, 2006 02:42 PMMarc,
I'm guessing she just said "fuck it. I'm coked up enough. I'll do it myself."
Either way, it's good to know his dying was all about her.
Posted by: marc at November 22, 2006 02:50 PMWell, she did mention she was in the midst of making a "searching and fearless moral inventory." Though she may have been referring to her liquor cabinet.
Posted by: Emily at November 22, 2006 03:00 PMI know it caused much soulful drinking on my part.
BTW, what the hell did it mean in the article when they had "(12st book)" after that quote? Is that some of that magic bean tech shit?
Posted by: marc at November 22, 2006 03:06 PMAh. I feel so proud of my generation... this is our role model. Pfft.

Why are the hot ones either crazy or dumb as a sack full of hammers?
Posted by: Mumblix Grumph at November 22, 2006 10:03 PMMumblix, she ain't even all that hot no more.
"He left us with a legend that all of us have the ability to do," except the ability to write in English.
Marc, I'm guessing (12st book) isn't a cardinal number of things she wrote (THANK GOD) but an abbreviation for "12-step book". And step 13 is that truimphs trample a million people but we should treasure that triumph.
I think that we should all take her up on her "I'm just a phone call away" offer. Let's see, that's 1-900...
Posted by: Nightfly at November 23, 2006 09:08 AMOk, maybe I'm stupid or maybe it's a Canadian thing... but don't people usually send their heartfelt condolences to the family of the bereaved in a fucking sympathy card that they hand wrote to the family? Is it me? I mean, I know I live all the way in Saskatchewan but honestly... I never thought I was that behind the times to now know the thing to do now is to issue a press release.
Shit. And to think that just only a month or so ago, I actually physically went to the funeral of a friend's dad and *gasp* went right up to her and *double gasp* hugged her. How gauche of me. And geez, but God forbid we also sent food or something to the family. Oh well, why should anyone expect some idiot 42 year old from Saskatchewan to know the 'in' thing to have done would have been to issue a press release. I'll know better for next time.
Posted by: fracas at November 23, 2006 02:21 PMWell I'm hot, and I'm not crazy.
Come here little bay be!
I doubt Lohan had any real personal feelings for the family or for Altman. She may have had an "oh wow, that's too bad" moment, but I doubt it went any deeper than that. One of her handlers probably told her that it would be a boost to her career to say something about him, though, and one of her publicists probably cooked this up. Of course she issued a statement instead of sending a personal note -- it's all about the career in Hollywood.
Posted by: Andrea Harris at November 25, 2006 10:54 AMLol, I was mocking her... not to be confused with the teenage term "macking" which sounds similar but means to do what we old people used to refer to as "necking".
Now there's the segue to talk about odd teen lingo, or necking, whichever everyone prefers.
Oy.
Posted by: fracas at November 25, 2006 12:20 PMActually, it's pretty typical to issue public statements about people you've worked with when they pass. This letter was just one of a series from people who knew Altman personally and professionally. Most of them were touching, gracious and heart-felt. This one was just...um...
Posted by: Emily at November 27, 2006 07:46 AMMumblix, I think it's some kind of trade-off thing - like the world would explode or something if there were hot women who were also totally sane, good wage-earners, and brilliant.
I am at least two of that four. (I sincerely doubt my hotness but that's ok with me. And some days I doubt my sanity.)
I dunno. I could make a similar comment about guys I suspect - although mine would probably go on the lines of "...are already married, are gay, or tend to be a-holes."
Posted by: ricki at November 27, 2006 02:16 PMLittle update that's probably been seen. "The Independent" had to have its take on this. Including this gem:
"Or was this Exhibit A for the indictment of America's education system?"
Eh..yeah.
Posted by: marc at November 29, 2006 08:48 AMI know she spelled it wrong, but if you've seen the special features of A Prairie Home Companion you would know that she talks about "adequate" being her new favorite word because Altman would use it humorously on the set after takes. Give her a break, she's a regular person who probably didn't reread it before she sent it.
Posted by: Kat at November 30, 2006 10:40 PMNo, she is not a regular person, for, as noted above, we quaint regular people don't issue press releases of sympathy. And if that's what celebs do instead of dealing privately and intimately with family and friends, well, Lohan's got a staff of gazillions who can check her freaking releases for such niceties as spelling, grammar, word choice, and sense.
Hey, I'm an editor who could use another client at the moment. Anyone got her address?
Posted by: galoux at December 1, 2006 06:47 AMKat,
Don't be so patronizing and assuming. I HAVE seen the special features for A Prairie Home Companion. And I'm not going to give her or anyone else a break for being a "regular person" when they hire a staff of professionals to shove their face and personality in the media and lead a deliberately public life. If she's too stupid to re-read something she is releasing to the press and knows is going to be seen by a large amount of people, she deserves all the mocking she gets. I take more care on this friggin' blog for goodness' sake.
