Does this bother you too?

Is anyone else bothered by this as much as I am?

But bad news for MA Gov. Mitt Romney: Mormonism is only slightly more popular than Islam, and GOPers are 10 points more likely to view Romney’s religion unfavorably than Dems. Looks like he has his work cut out for him.
I have nothing in particular* against Mormons, I don't know why Republicans would (other than GROSSLY outdated views of that particular CHRISTIAN sect), and as I said in a comment at Bitter's post:
I am hard-pressed to remember the last time anyone hijacked an airliner, beheaded an infidel, shot up a grammar school, or set off a bomb in the name of Moroni.
And I stand by it.

As far as I know, the entire beef against Mormons is over polygamy, and the last time I checked, (a) Mormons don't do it any more, and (b) Muslims, at least those of a particularly virulent bent, do. And murder schoolchildren besides.

*Okay, there's that door-to-door thing but Jehovah's Witlesses are much more annoying on that score.

It's at least partly the door-to-door thing. They are just as annoying as the JWs if you live in an area with a lot of them around (I did for a while).

Oh - and you might want to check a couple of the ex-Mormon websites. Oh, and go read their version of scripture and get back to me on the 'Christian' thing.

In this area it's JW.

And are their versions of scripture really that different from other Christians? I think they qualify at least as much as Unitarians, don't they?

This country won't elect a Mormon. I'd bet $$ on it. Too many people think it's a cult....

But Matt and Trey say it's the right answer.....

True - neither are Christians. The difference is that most Unitarians don't claim to be Christians (according to Wikipedia). To Mormons, all of the nominally Christian sects are heresies, and Mormonism is the only true Christianity. "You're religion is screwed" is not as radioactive as "I'm doing the right version of you're religion."

"Why Mormons aren't Christians" is an issue that could get its own blog. I'll mention the most critical reason: Mormons (and Unitarians, for that matter) reject the doctrine of the Trinity. Wikipedia documents a paltry amount of supporting Biblical verses; Answering Islam is more thorough.

Mormom belief that God was once a mortal kinda erodes their claim to Christianity as well.

Mitt should look on the bright side, at least he isn't an atheist. They poll lower than Muslims and Mormons.

I don't mind voting for a Mormon, but I don't think I'll vote for Mitt in the primary. Looking at it from the outside, belief in the whole Moroni think isn't fundamentally different than Muhammed getting the Koran straight from God, burning bushes, virgin births or the golden guy with the big belly.

I'll probably vote for Ron Paul, because I'd like to continue my tradition of NEVER voting for a primary candidate who goes on to win.

Ken,
Polygamy isn't the *entire* beef exactly. There's a lot more to it. You can read about it here if you want to take the time. There's a lot of info in there.

I'll be voting for Romney. As a commenter at The Bitch Girls pointed out, Mormons have a tendency topward libertarianism,. probably because government has seldom been well disposed toward them. I live in a heavily Mormon area, and although I'll never be able to buy into their theology, I find they make great neighbors. If a Mormonn can run the country as well as they run this county, I'll be happy.

Joel, I strongly recommend you read Bitter's other posts about Romney. Most Mormons may have those tendencies, Romney does not.

For the most part, couldn't care less about his being Mormon: it's his anti-gun-ownership actions and other such BS that would keep me from voting for him.
