Did you watch the parents of the boys on 60 Minutes? One of the moms said that every mother of sons should be very afraid about how easy this was to perpetrate. VERY afraid. And I agree.

You know, I'm a college professor. If one of my students were accused of a crime, even a heinous crime, I'd hope that I'd be wise enough to realize:

a. Innocent until proven guilty
b. Even if s/he did it, that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with their performance in class.

I mean, I've had students who pissed me off, who seemed to go to special lengths to be rude and annoying, who challenged me for every point I took off on their exams. And I'm not allowed to fail a one of them just because they're a burr under my saddle.

I mean, yeah, if a student were part of a campus-wide cheating ring and I had good solid evidence they cheated in my class, I could fail them for that. But if they are accused of, say, knocking over a liquor store, I couldn't. Even if it were my favorite liquor store in the whole world and the robbery caused it to go out of business.

I dunno. People like those Duke profs (and others) give the rest of us a bad name. It frustrates me because I work hard, I am honest, I am fair (at least I think so), and I still have people who are suspicious of me or even hate me because of what I do, just because of a few jagdorfs who can't separate their politics from what they do for a living.
