For Mary Claire (via Joel).
Note to skeptics: Don't be a dick. God knows I'm as skeptical and capable of mocking religion as anyone, but there's a time and place and this is not it.
Posted by Ken S at January 22, 2007 06:59 PM | TrackBack (0) |Thanks for the link, Ken. You missed out on what-all this troll had to say. I don't mind if he's obnoxious about more impersonal matters, but this is a five-year-old girl with cancer, for God's sake.
I'll keep you posted as we learn more about Mary Claire. Thanks to anybody who prays (and for good wishes from anybody who doesn't).
Posted by: Joel at January 22, 2007 07:11 PMMan. That is horribly sad. Thanks the heads up, I'll add her to my list. Keep us posted. :-(
Posted by: alli at January 22, 2007 08:05 PMWhat a dick that guy was. I'm from the Sam Harris school of conversational intolerance, but even I know that's not the time.
Posted by: Tainted Bill at January 23, 2007 04:56 AMWow...what kind of bitter crap-ass person do you have to be to piss all over a request like that?
And yeah - like Joel said - I know people who had cancer who were cured "inexplicably" or "miraculously" (depending on the belief system of the doctor describing it).
So yeah, good thoughts and prayers goin' her way.
Posted by: ricki at January 23, 2007 05:33 AMYeah, I'm known for making insensitive comments at inappropriate times, but...
Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at January 23, 2007 05:58 AMMaybe prayers don't heal cancer as much as they possibly help to console the people and their loved ones who have to live and die with it. That "cholo" person is an asshole. When are in-your-face athiests going to learn that they're as equally obnoxious as in-your-face Christians or other types of religious missionaries?
Posted by: Emily at January 23, 2007 07:29 AMExactly. I have no illusions that I can cause any particular change in anyone's medical condition but knowing that others have one in their thoughts can help ease the hurt a little.
Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at January 23, 2007 07:41 AMI don't get why he keeps insisting that people NOT pray. Whatever your level of belief or non-belief, how could praying POSSIBLY hurt?
I don't think atheists do that. I think theists who are mad at God do that.
Posted by: Laura(southernxyl) at January 23, 2007 04:23 PMI love how he's rejected as the exception among atheists, but when a Christian acts so obnoxiously, that's proof fucking positive that we're all religious nuts.
Posted by: Boy Named Sous at January 23, 2007 10:51 PMi.e. cholo - what an asshat!!
Laura has it right - theists mad at/afraid of God and praying are the idiots.
Think we can REALLY piss him off and tell him we are praying for him?! LOL
Posted by: Sharon Ferguson at January 24, 2007 11:02 AMI've taken to deleting him as soon as his comments appear. Life's too short. My wife, on the other hand, is amusing herself by creatively editing his comments as they come in.
Thanks again to anybody who prayed. Last I heard they were going to try chemo, but it didn't look hopeful.
