Believe it or not, I just saw the term "PDF" used as a verb and am currently stiffling the urge to do major damage to walls and fist.
Posted by Ken S at February 12, 2007 07:42 AM | TrackBack (0) |The letters "PDF" do that to me in general.
Posted by: Emily at February 12, 2007 07:45 AMI am guilty of this. I use PDF as a verb all the time. I use EPS the same way. But I seldom use either outside of shop talk.
Posted by: Cullen at February 12, 2007 08:58 AMMe too, Cullen. But I never thought of it as something to feel guilty for. Saying "make a PDF of this" is just too cumbersome when you do it hundreds of times a day. Ditto wiith EPSing.

Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at February 12, 2007 09:17 AMI've spoken of "needing to PDF-ify" something, but only facetiously.
fortunately, I don't often need to make PDF files.
Posted by: ricki at February 12, 2007 10:45 AMPDFs are good for one thing - making sure the DEL key still works on your keyboard.
I would forward this thread to Friday and use it for the obvious.
Or start a contest and see who comes up with the most creative words to describe how we feel about PDFs. You know, like Poor Damn Format?
Posted by: Curious Feller at February 12, 2007 10:55 AMApparently, the end user simply isn't worthy of the format. ;)
Posted by: Cullen at February 12, 2007 11:28 AMI have no issues with using PDF. It's actually a fairly useful format.
I just have a major issue with using it as a verb.
Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at February 12, 2007 12:05 PMTouche, Cullen! Ha ha!
Posted by: Curious Feller at February 12, 2007 12:18 PMI don't have any issues with making a verb out of it. Those who write "utilize" where a [perfectly good "use" would suffice, on the other hand...
Posted by: John at February 12, 2007 01:32 PMKen,
Can you PDF me this thread via email?
Thanks.
Posted by: Val Prieto at February 12, 2007 03:09 PMCongratulations Ken: in addition to lesbian gorillas, you can add PDFilia to your list of accomplished threads.

Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at February 12, 2007 03:36 PMPDF as a verb should mean "to make something immensely larger than it needs to be."

And SLOWER.
My office is guilty of this. But my one new co-worker makes a verb out of just about all our applications and it sounds weird, especially when the application names are real verbs with other meanings. When I hear her say she's going to "TAP" a document again instead of "update the document in TAP" my blood runs cold.

*Sigh* Ever our T.U.C.K.S. It's get medieval on their asses.
Dear, I did it deliberately (though I now notice I mistyped the last syllable).

And SLOWER.
What kind of PDFs are you guys dealing with? I regularly deal with 10 - 20 MB documents (sometimes in excess of 120 MB) in desktop publishing. The only way to make these documents available to the general public is to turn them into PDFs (which easily cuts their file size in half, if not more).
Posted by: Cullen at February 13, 2007 08:28 AMYou'll get no help for me on this, Cullen. Adobe Reader crashes my work PC so PDF's are verboten here.
Posted by: Nightfly at February 13, 2007 10:39 AMCullen, not to get all geeky here, but when you print a PDF document, for whatever reason, the damn thing balloons in size whilst going to the printer. So Adobe printing tends to be slooooooooooow. Very frustrating.
But, yes, for distributing files outside your office, PDF is the way to go. I do it all the time myself.
Posted by: The_Real_JeffS at February 13, 2007 03:31 PMMaybe Firefox could come up with a less cumbersone PDF reader.
