My first and only "American Idol" post ever

Okay, I suppose that technically it's not my first one. Once again, I'm listening from the other room and I just have to say this:

Smokey Robinson still sounds good.

UPDATE: Fuuuuccccckkkkk. So does the Sainted Gladys Knight. Be still my heart.

Elsewhere I proposed a rule - nobody is allowed to remake any Smokey Robinson song without submitting samples and signed affidavits to a committee of R&B legends for prior approval. Now you know why. He sounds better singing about Dr Pepper than many people sound on the radio.

All in favor?

I had the sound off b/c I was on the phone and I thought Gladys Knight even LOOKED awesome. That's the way to do it, kids.

When I was in Jr. High and High School, I wanted to be a Pip. I didn't want to be Gladys Knight -- no one can touch her! -- but I wanted to do the "Leavin'!" background vocals and the cool dance numbers. It didn't matter that I was the wrong sex and the wrong race. That was my dream.

Hmmm... maybe it still is......

I prefer Eurovision - any musical genre can win, and not just schmaltzy pop crooners.

Eurovision 2007 winner

Eurovision 2006 winner

I will forgive that, Alan, provided you assure me and the rest of the civilized universe that by "schmaltzy" you are referring to the contestants and not the Sainted Gladys.

Because I like you and it would bother me greatly to have to hunt you down and gut you with a rusty fork.

Uh... didn't ABBA win Eurovision with "Waterloo" way back when? (Not that I'm a fan, or anything... why you lookin' at me like that? Lies, all lies!!)

I was definitely referring to the Idol contestants.

Abba won Eurovision in 1974.

If I had a great singing voice, I would absolutely SUCK on American Idol. Most of the song selection is average, and I can't fake being in a good mood consistently enough to make it through an entire singing competition. I'm also real picky about instrumental quality - I want better than a 1970s variety show band. (Certainly not that hideous orchestra that played in the finale where Fantasia won.)
