oh, a-freaking-men.
What I really, really hate with a burning passion is the people who call you up and ask you for a donation - say, $100. When I say, no, I'm not going to do that, they try to "Dutch auction*" me down...'till they're finally like, "$15? Can't you give a measly $15, you tightfisted slimeball?"
Unfortunately, I'm too nice to just hang up (or to curse them out). I have - when I have the presence of mind to do it - asked the person soliciting what percentage of the money given ACTUALLY goes to the charity. Anything below about 85% is met with, "I'm sorry, but your overhead costs are too high. Goodbye."
(*And hearty apologies to all of our Dutch friends, but that's the term I've always heard for when someone lowers the price progressively on something)
Well, in all fairness, "Dutch auction" is an insensitive term. You should try to jew them down.
