When life hands you lemons, and all that

This is one of those breathlessly written ecodisaster stories, and I'm not really sure why.

Voracious jumbo squid invade California
Wed Jul 25, 8:15 AM ET

MONTEREY, Calif. - Jumbo squid that can grow up to 7 feet long and weigh more than 110 pounds are invading central California waters and preying on local anchovy, hake and other commercial fish populations, according to a study published Tuesday.

Calamari for everyone!

Check out the picture too. Technically, it's safe for work but someone could conceivably freak out.

Link, please. Although I loathe calamari (having experienced that aspect of seafood cuisine in Japan and Korea).

Ugly suckers, ain't they? Maybe Michael Moore can be tossed in the ocean off of California to combat this scourge. Just give him a bucket o' sauce, and let him go.

If only it were close to Christmas Eve! My great-aunt, God rest her soul, would be having a field day. (What, isn't anybody else here Italian?)

Giant crabs, giant squids, what's next? Mr. Chertoff? Mrs. Paul? Bueller? Anyone?

If Hitchcock were still around he could make The Squid, in which squid terrorize a small California town and peck at people with their sharp beaks.

Don't laugh too fast. Humboldt squid travel in herds and have been known to attack humans. Lots of fishermen down in the Sea of Cortez have horror stories and nasty scars from these beasties. Every sucker is ringed with teeth.

Swimming in the ocean at night just became a bad idea.

In other news, the pistol shrimp.

There's a potential Godzilla movie in there...
