Are we talking about the same guy?

So Bill's comment made me actually take the time to post something I've been wondering about for a while. Are we talking about the same James Dobson? The one who thinks Fred Thompson may not [gasp!] be a Christian? Who sounds like Cotton Mather's reactionary little brother?

Reason I ask is because I'm personally offended, or would be if I gave them any actual thought or heed or even the left half of a rat's patoot, about some of the stupid things he says. Particularly, his ridiculous comments about gays and other "social conservative" hot button issues just irritate the snot out of me, almost as much as Pat Robertson does.

Then I catch his little snippets that come on at various times during the morning show on the local VRWC radio show, where he comes across sounding like one of those mealy-mouthed, whiny-assed, uber-liberal, child-spoiling, new age, psychobabble-spouting "child experts" like you see in that section of your local newspaper you never read. You know the kind, the ones that think Dr. Spock was too much of a hardass and may have harbored fascist tendencies.

Seriously, what gives?

I remember something in religion classes (when I was paying attention) about the devil speaking with a forked tongue... that could be it.

Whatever he is, I'd like to see him follow through on his third party threats. I want to know how much actual support he has. But I think the spectre of President Hillary (something I consider to be almost inevitable, at this point) would cause most of his supporters to still pull the level for whoever the Republicans nominate.

Isn't James Dobson also the guy who accused SpongeBob SquarePants of having the love that dare not speak its name?

I don't know. I tend to think that most Christians have better things to do with their time than accuse other Christians of "not being Christian enough" or looking for homosexuals behind every pineapple...

Is he the Spongebob guy? I thought that was Robertson, but then all those types tend to blur together in my mind.

Dobson was Spongebob, Falwell was Tinky Winky. Robertson is the "kill Hugo Chavez while loving Charles Taylor" guy.

Robertson is the "kill Hugo Chavez"

Well, broken clock, etc.

I wouldn't miss Hugo, but I might feel like a bit of a hypocrite 20 years from now when I'm upset that the Kerplunkistanis assassinated President Smith.

Well, but that might work out rather well for Vice President McCabe, no?

I see that you're a future member of the 3/15/32 Truther movement, eh?

He's just getting a head start.

Dobson's child-rearing ideas are surprisingly rooted in common sense (he advocated spanking back when Spock was trendy), but I wish he'd keep his mouth shut when it comes to politics. Even in those areas where I agree with him.
