Anybody have a recommendation for some decent DVD burning software? My needs are neither expansive nor elaborate, but I want the capability to chop up and rearrange movies and burn them to DVD, preferably with chapters and menu. Also to export clips that I can upload. I'm trying to put all of the home movies I have on disc into some kind of sensible organization so I can burn copies for family.
I tried the Nero v.7 demo that came with the DVD burner. It seems to do what I want but it's very cumbersome and not user-friendly. Also, I think it may no longer be available after the recent release of v.8, whose system requirements look like they may overwhelm my three-year-old computer (and I don't want to replace the computer until the kid$ are out of college). And v.8 has a whole lot of bells and whistles I don't care about but that will probably take up valuable disk space and memory.
Yesterday, I picked up Fireman 3.0, based on recommendations I found on the Innernets (and the low, low price). It looks like it will be good and fast for the actual burning but as far as I can tell, it doesn't allow for ripping and rearranging clips and won't export clips. At least, I can't find any way to do it and there doesn't seem to be anything in the manual about it. It's supposed to be able to do chaptering and such too, but I haven't figured that part out yet.
So anybody have any recommendations?
Posted by Ken S at October 17, 2007 06:51 AM | TrackBack (0) |If all you want to do is cut video DVDs, check out Ulead's Video Studio. This is what I use for playing around with my video camera.
I haven't tried the ripping feature as yet, so I don't know how that works. They have a trial software package, anyway.

Posted by: The_Real_JeffS at October 17, 2007 07:54 AMI have a freeware burner that was recommended to me on the Internet Archive. I can't think offhand what it's called, but I'll look when I get home.

Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at October 17, 2007 06:50 PMI'll second that I like Ulead's Video Studio, which came as an OEM version with my digital camcorder. For ripping though, I use DVDDecrypter and then DVD Shrink to reauthor my DVDs. It removes freakishly annoying things like Whoopi Goldberg intoning on a Loony Tunes disc how the examples of sexism and racism should be noticed, or ignored, or whatever the hell she bitches about. And this is on my child's DVD. Or was; I now have a cleaner copy sans Whoopi bullshit.
Burning software. Hmmm. I have several free and commercial packages. Microburner and Deep Burner work okay. There is another open source piece available at Sourceforge which only authors your DVDs for you and creates and image. You would need separate software to burn the image. Cannot remember the name, but it works okay. It might do what you need.
