Ken's old college buddy Julie, in a gesture of cruelty that can only transpire from the truest of friendships, e-mailed me some old pictures of Mr. Summers from their days as co-eds. Posted below the fold for discretion and fear of being raided by the fashion police.
Ken's second from the top right, the fellow who appears to be looking for love in all the wrong places:

In this one, he's the guy who looks like David Koresh, third from the top right. Julie's on the far right, in the blue dress, just below fro-boy in the red shirt:

Second from the top right again:

I'm so glad I can blame dressing bad in the seventies on my parents.
Special thanks to Julie for sending these along.
Posted by Emily at October 29, 2007 10:33 AM | TrackBack (0) |Wow Ken, I didn't know that you were in the Doobie Brothers!
That kid in the blue t-shirt and cutoffs... did he have five copies of that outfit or something?
Posted by: nightfly at October 29, 2007 10:42 AMEmily, it was my pleasure.
Ken, buddy, all I can say is... ya shoulda paid me to keep quiet.
:-)
Posted by: Julie at October 29, 2007 10:50 AMIt's okay. I blame the drugs.
Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at October 29, 2007 11:32 AMI was going to blame the drugs, too, but you didn't really seem like the type.
Posted by: Emily at October 29, 2007 11:38 AMKen was a co-ed?
Posted by: Mr. Bingley at October 29, 2007 12:12 PMKen lived on the stoner floor. Hey, if you want good dope, ask a chemist!
I wondered the same thing, Mr. Bingley. I wonder if "his" wife knows about "his" secret?
Posted by: The_Real_JeffS at October 29, 2007 12:23 PMThat's so funny to think of a place where there's just one "stoner floor." You could have said that about any floor in any dorm for any building on campus at Humboldt State. Even the academic ones.
Posted by: Emily at October 29, 2007 12:27 PMMr. B. -- I left the question of gender sort of dubious, since it's kind of hard to sort the boys from the girls in these photos.
Posted by: Emily at October 29, 2007 12:40 PMWell, at the time we had 8 dorms at our college, and 8 colleges at the university. So I can't speak for the whole campus regarding stoner floors (I didn't get around THAT much...) (Shut up, Ken!) :-)
Posted by: Julie at October 29, 2007 01:06 PMHell, I'm still trying to figure out which was the non-stoner floor...
Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at October 29, 2007 01:27 PMOh, and since she didn't see fit to mention herself, Julie is is in the second pic far right in the blue dress (in front of the guy in the red t-shirt, who was my roommate that year).
Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at October 29, 2007 01:30 PMOops, missed that line where you said Julie was. Red t-shirt guy was my roomie that year, guy between me and him was my roomie sophomore year.
Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at October 29, 2007 01:32 PMUh, I mentioned it, Ken. Are you sure you're still not on the stoner floor?
Posted by: Emily at October 29, 2007 01:32 PMThe effects can last for years...
And with that, I'm outta here again. Catch you next week.
Posted by: Ken S, Fifth String on the Banjo of Life at October 29, 2007 01:47 PMNow that I'm at home, and the photos aren't blocked by the firewall at work, I can see that Ken is indeed a "David Koresh" look alike. Scary.....I never realized that Ken was a cult leader.
Posted by: The_Real_JeffS at October 29, 2007 04:20 PMAnd a DEAD one at that, Jeff!
Posted by: Emily at October 29, 2007 04:21 PMOoooo, Emily! "Ken Summers, Cult Leader and Zombie at large"!
Posted by: The_Real_JeffS at October 29, 2007 05:49 PMI dunno. They all kinda look like David Koresh.
If I've identified Ken properly, he looks like a boy I knew in high school named Rusty. Had the same kind of shirt, hair, and glasses. I always meant to have a crush on him, but I never got around to it.
I envy the legs on that gal lying on the grass.
Oops, wait. That's a boy. Well, still...
Posted by: Angie Schultz at October 29, 2007 06:02 PMMadre de Dios, my eyes! The 70's burns them!
Seriously, though, Ken doesn't really look all THAT much different now. Add a mustache and a haircut and that's about it.
Posted by: Dave J at October 29, 2007 06:15 PMThese are so reminding me of my uncles, except one would have to be wearing a dashiki (not sure if I spelled that right).
I think I'd need a picture of David Koresh smiling to make a decent comparison to Ken. And Ken, Julie--please tell me Ken's sophomore year roommate is standing on something in the second photo. He looks gigantic!
Posted by: Kate P at October 30, 2007 04:17 AMOh yeah. . .
(BTW I meant to say earlier that Julie looks cute.)
Posted by: Kate P at October 30, 2007 07:10 AMDoesn't she? She's got a killer smile.
Posted by: Emily at October 30, 2007 07:16 AMThanks, Kate and Emily. I still have the same smile, but add 100+ pounds to the body (siiigh)...
Oh, and yes, Kate, he's standing on a picnic table that the rest of us are sitting on. He was actually on the short side. (Of course, almost everyone is 'on the short side' to me, since I'm 6'2!)
Posted by: Julie at October 30, 2007 07:52 AMY'know, I had him pegged before I read the captions. Something about that face seemed to fit the Ken we know. (Odd, because we've never actually met.) Maybe it's the perpetual smartass look.
Julie, you're 6'2? Cool! If you were from Tennessee or maybe Birmingham, that would be perfect. ("She's long, and she's tall...") You certainly were a looker.
Posted by: Joel, President of Catholics for Xenu at October 30, 2007 08:59 AMJoel,
It's probably never a good idea to tell a lady that she was a looker. I mean, unless she's like 80 or something. That might be okay.
Hey, that's ok. I take it as a compliment :-)
Posted by: Julie at October 30, 2007 12:17 PMEmily, I stand corrected. Julie, you are undoubtedly lovely to look upon, as evidenced by your picture from 30 years ago. (Is that better?)
Posted by: Joel, President of Catholics for Xenu at October 30, 2007 05:35 PMAwww, thanky, Joel!
But, as a friend says, "Ya can't shine a sneaker!" :-)
