Headline of the day

From the Sackatomatoes Bee (registration required):

Teens' texting symbols invade schoolwork :-(
Very cute.

Of course, if I were a teacher, especially in an English class, the use of emoticons in a paper would get an automatic F.

OMG WTF u guys! N F 4 txtn a trmppr? ROFLOL wut a n00b.

"Me fail English? That's un-possible!"

Seriously? (SRSLY?) I've seen students in my non-majors class use some things from this in their homework. Like 'U' for "you" or "4" for "for."

It's almost gotten to the point where I don't write in all the corrections any more because of the amount of time it takes me. Very frustrating.

And here I thought I was going to have to learn Spanish to be able to communicate in my country in the future - nope, gotta learn Textspeak as well.

(Incidentally, trying to decipher the really "hardcore" textspeech - like NF's first sentence up there - gives me a headache. )

That's not textspeech, it's "l33tsp3ak"

You know, I get the text speak shit for cell phones, where you're limited in the number of characters you can send in one message, but I can't stand when that carries over onto paper and regular places where you've got all space you need. How much time is saved by typing "u" instead of "you" anyway?

I'll use some abbreviations like "FWIW" (God knows I'm used to military jargon, where acronyms are used as words, or "Q" codes in ham radio), and emoticons to emphasize text, but that's it. I will not text on cell phones (at most, I'll just send photos with a few words), and I loathe the texting shorthand. I'd rather use a stylus on a clay tablet.

And in school work or professional communications? No way!
